Rachael study

A study for a commission from a friend who lives in Bangkok.

I was lucky enough to visit the city at the start of 2026, and it’s an incredible place. One of the things that struck me was the Blade Runner esque feel to the lighting and movement in the streets after dark. I wanted to bring that in to the pieces, so I took frames from the two Blade Runner films to use as composition guides for the abstract shapes.

The highlight on Rachael’s face is picked out in the contrasting fluro orange, with the blocking of the overall scene translated into custom shapes. The wave in the background is the smoke from this iconic Voigt-Kampf scene.

These custom shapes are then created as repeating lines, in different ways. Some are hand drawn and repeated, some are created in a bespoke new tool I built with Processing to create complex repeating shapes in a way that can’t be done in Inkscape. Once the lines are created, I then mask out the shapes on the canvas, and then through trial and error lines up the shapes with where they should be on the canvas. The blocks are then built up with two to four layers of colour and transparency to get the overall gradient effects.
